Proposal

I am creating an album for the band Of Monsters and Men. There music is an Indie genre and so therefore has a uniqueness to it. I hope to make the album cover similar to a mixture of other albums, I don’t want it to look similar to one particular album or artist, I would like to use a mix and match of similar artefacts found in similar bands that may be Indie or Alternative. For example I would like it to use a similar look to albums owned by artists such as Lenka, Imagine Dragons, Bastille and some of the Of Monsters and Men current albums.

I am naming the product after an existing song of the band called Dirty Paws. By calling it Dirty Paws this means I am going to add in some references to nature, such as trees, animals such as bears, elephants, lions etc. but also I may include small additions of paw prints to the design. In addition to the theme of nature I would also like to include a night sky background or similar and other features of nature that suit the theme.

As previously mentioned I would like to add nature into the album cover, due to the bands large amounts of references to nature in their songs. However I would like to include a mix of items that are unrelated to nature and be able to insert pictures of these things in different styles of art such as photography, painting and drawing in order to create the look of a collage picture. By doing this I would like it to look imaginative in order to help to build upon the buyers imagination while at the same time, making it look like a mix and match of different things I would like to make it look different in order to bring across a unique style and difference that represent the band while at the same time bring across a visual message that although sometimes things can look odd or different they can still fit, or in other words, it’s good to be different.

I would like to use a colour scheme that is subtle yet warm in order to bring across a friendly feel to the album. I would like to use a fair amount of colour that is close to being natural to fit in with the nature included but also I would like to use some antique style colours because I feel that this would add to the natural colours but also the warmth and imaginative feel of the cover.

I think I will steer away from some of the conventions, because I would lIke to make the cover look different and therefore will complete the message of difference. Also I would like to make it stand out, so missing out some conventions such as pictures of the band, because this is fairly similar to most other album covers. However I  will stick with most conventions such as album name, band name, some graphic design, however I would like to use a slightly different look, because graphic design is also used in many album covers, however I will also use tracklist and conventions for sales and production, because I still want it to seem like an album, I don’t want to completely redefine it, I want people to still look at it and know that its an album.

As previously mentioned I want to use a range of different ways of creating a picture, such as photography, painting and drawing and I want to put it all together into a collage type picture in order to give at a imaginative and different feel. I want it to have the effect that it causes people to wonder and maybe create an imagination from it themselves. I will be using mis-en scene to create the message of difference by possibly adding in things related to the indie fashions while at the same time adding in pictures of animals, with those items to once again to the different, imaginative look. To do this I would like to find photographs of items such as bowler hats, pocket watches, weird looking trees, forest animals and other things that are related to nature and my help to boost people's imagination when they look at it.

I will still include the institutional information however I will have that maybe at the back of the package because I want most of the focus to be on the cover.
